Why Deleting Photos Doesn't Free Space Immediately

Deleted photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days before the space comes back. Here is what is happening and how to finish the job.

You deleted two hundred photos and a couple of long videos. You check Settings and the free space number has barely moved. Nothing is broken. iOS is doing exactly what it promised, and there is one more step.

Deleting moves the file, it does not remove it

When you delete a photo or video, Photos moves it to the Recently Deleted album and keeps it there for 30 days. The bytes are still on the device the whole time. This is deliberate. Accidental deletion is common, and a month is a generous window to notice.

You will find the album in Photos under Albums, in the Utilities section. On recent iOS versions it is locked behind Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

How to actually empty it

  1. Open Photos and go to Albums.
  2. Scroll to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted.
  3. Authenticate when prompted.
  4. Tap Select, then Delete All, and confirm.

That is the step that returns the space. Give the storage screen a few minutes afterward; it recalculates on its own schedule and often reports stale numbers for a while.

Before you empty it: the 30-day window is the only undo you get. Scroll the album once and make sure nothing in there was a mistake. After Delete All, recovery is not something an app can offer you.

iCloud Photos adds its own delay

If iCloud Photos is on, deleting on one device deletes everywhere, and Recently Deleted syncs too. Emptying it on your phone removes those items from iCloud Photos and from your other devices. The sync is not instant, and neither is the storage recalculation on either end.

This is also why your iCloud storage number and your device storage number move at different times, and by different amounts. They are measuring two different things.

Compressed copies have a second waiting room

Compression makes the delay longer, and it is worth understanding before you start.

An encoder does not shrink a file in place. It writes a smaller copy alongside the original. Until you say otherwise, both files exist, so free space goes down during a compression run. When you approve the result with Keep compressed, the originals are removed, at which point iOS puts them in Recently Deleted for the usual 30 days.

So the full path from a large library to actual free space is: compress, review, keep compressed, empty Recently Deleted. Four steps, and only the last one moves the number in Settings.

Why Unfill says "ready to free" instead of "freed"

It would be easy to show a big number at the end of a compression run and call it space saved. It would also be wrong, and you would find out the moment you opened Settings.

Unfill treats those bytes as pending until they are not. The session recap leads with what is ready to free and the action that frees it, and its capacity bar shows now versus after clearing rather than a before-and-after that has not happened yet. The claim matches what is on disk.

When you need space right now

If you are stuck mid-recording and need room in the next two minutes:

  • Empty Recently Deleted first. It is the fastest real space on the device and it often holds more than people expect.
  • Delete one or two large videos, then empty Recently Deleted again.
  • Offload an app you are not using. Settings, General, iPhone Storage, pick the app, Offload App. Documents and data stay.

Then do the calmer version later. Finding out what is actually taking up space is a better use of an evening than deleting at random. Unfill is coming to the App Store, and support is open if something in your library is not adding up.
