The warning usually arrives at the worst moment. You go to record something, and iOS tells you there is no room. The fastest way out is not to start deleting at random. It is to find out where the space actually went.
Start with the storage screen
Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. Give it a moment to finish calculating. You get a bar across the top and a list of apps sorted largest first.
For most people that list has one obvious problem and a long tail of small stuff. Photos is usually the obvious problem. Two things are worth knowing before you act on the number it shows:
- It counts what is stored on this device, not what is in your library. If iCloud Photos is set to Optimize iPhone Storage, the device may hold smaller versions while the full-size originals live in iCloud, so the row can read far lower than the real library.
- The numbers lag. Delete something and the bar may not move for several minutes.
Video is usually most of the problem
Photo libraries feel like photos. They are usually mostly video. A minute of 4K at 60 frames per second can run a few hundred megabytes. A minute of 1080p at 30 runs a small fraction of that. Ten clips you have never rewatched can outweigh a thousand photos you look at all the time.
Screen recordings are the quiet version of this. They are long, they are full resolution, and almost nobody keeps them on purpose.
The four kinds of weight in a library
- Oversized originals. Files captured at a quality far above how you will ever watch them. This is where compression does its best work.
- Duplicates and near-duplicates. Copies from AirDrop, re-saved exports, and burst runs where you kept eleven frames of one moment.
- Clutter. Screenshots, saved images from chats, downloads. Individually tiny, collectively not.
- Things you would delete on sight. Blurred shots, accidental recordings, photos of a parking sign from 2023.
Each one wants a different action. Sorting them out is most of the job.
What System Data is, and why chasing it fails
System Data covers caches, logs, and temporary files. It grows and shrinks on its own, and iOS trims it when space runs low. Reboots and app reinstalls occasionally shake something loose, but the effect is unpredictable and rarely large. Free up real space and System Data typically settles.
A calm order of operations
- Empty Recently Deleted. There may already be gigabytes waiting there.
- Sort by size and deal with the largest videos first. A handful of decisions here beats hundreds of small ones.
- Clear obvious clutter, starting with screen recordings and old screenshots.
- Merge duplicates and burst runs down to the frame you actually want.
- Compress what is left that you want to keep but do not need at full quality.
Where Unfill fits
